2nd Annual “Bowling for Babies” Event, A Few Lanes Still Available

The Greene Community Health Foundation is “glowing” with excitement over an upcoming event for families looking for a little fun this month. Bowling for Babies is set for Saturday, January 21st, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at Beaver-Vu Bowl in Beavercreek. And this time, the bowling lanes will come alive with all new glow-in-the-dark effects, exciting lights and music!

Now in its second year, this event is a fundraiser for the various children’s clinics available to the public at the Greene County Combined Health District (GCCHD) located in Xenia. From immunizations against childhood diseases and dental cleanings and checkups to the Tots-N-Teens Well Child clinic and the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) clinic, thousands of children and their families receive services through GCCHD, many of whom are under- or un-insured. This family-friendly fun event will feature 2 ½ hours of glow bowling, great music, raffles, food and fun. In addition, a Strike Jackpot (ages 18+ only) will be held with chances to win cold, hard cash! Some of the raffle prizes include a Tiffany necklace, passes to Rave Motion Pictures at The Greene, a $100 gift card to the Mall at Fairfield Commons, tickets to a Wright State University basketball game and much more.

Families are invited to register up to 6 people of all ages, per team. If registering less than 6 bowlers, participants may be placed on a lane with other bowlers. The cost is $25.00 each for ages 13 and older and just $15.00 each for ages 12 and younger. If you aren’t a bowler, but would like to come and support the event and enjoy the prizes and food, it’s just $10.00 per person. Registrations will be accepted until 4pm on Wednesday, January 18th.

Groups of 10 or more are asked to call ahead for special rates. If you are interested in registering, please contact Laurie Fox at 937-374-5669, email her at lfox@gcchd.org or visit the website for a registration form at www.gcchd.org.

Velveteen Rabbit Comes to X-ACT December 8-10

“The Velveteen Rabbit” by Margery Williams is a classic story for children. Some have called it “How Toys Become Real”. All of us can connect with the passionate connection we had as children with a favorite stuffed animal. In the production at X*ACT the toys enjoy the love of the child and the love of the audience.

Xenia Area Community Theater, located at 45 E. Second St. in downtown Xenia, has been sponsoring children’s productions for over 5 years. This production is for the family with some strong actors returning from main stage productions and summer workshops. Olivia Hampton, Doug McKinley, and Macey and Haven Bradem have participated in many plays. Maria Smith, Hunter and Macie Sparks also have been on the X-Act stage previously.

Directed by Jennifer Sparks, herself an X*ACT veteran, “The Velveteen Rabbit” opens Thursday night, December 8th, with shows on Friday the 9th, also at 7:30 PM. Saturday the show will provide a wonderful ending to the “Hometown Christmas” in Xenia with a 6 PM show. Sunday’s Matinee is at 3 PM.

Annual Wreath Making Workshop

Not Ashamed Day Launches December 1st

In Britain, Christian Concern for our Nation is leading a major new campaign encouraging Christians to stand up and speak up for Jesus Christ in public life.

Wednesday 1st December 2010 has been designated ‘Not Ashamed’ day. Christians are being asked to ‘wear the symbol, declare the hope and share the vision’. (Read Lord George Carey’s Not Ashamed Vision

In launching the campaign, Andrea Minichiello Williams, Director of Christian Concern, said “Our society has undergone massive change in recent years and continues to face enormous challenges. At times the Church seems to have lost confidence that Jesus Christ is good news not just for individuals but also for our society as a whole. Now is the time for Christians to stand together and to speak clearly of Him to a nation that desperately needs to hear of Him, declaring Him to be the only true hope. The ‘Not Ashamed’ campaign is intended to help the Church to do that. We hope and pray that it will find great support amongst the Christian community and make a great impact for good on our country. We invite Christians everywhere to join us.”

Halloween: A Night for Treats, Not Tragedies

(Xenia, OH) – Did you know that on average, twice as many kids are killed while walking on Halloween as compared to any other day of the year? Kids will be out this weekend trick or treating while it is dark – making it harder for drivers to see them and because they’re excited about getting candy, they may not be watching out for cars.

Parents and drivers both need to do their part to help kids stay out of the emergency room on Halloween. Emphasize safe pedestrian behaviors to kids before they go out trick-or-treating.
Parents should also remember that costumes can be both creative and safe, so look for ways to use reflective materials. Drivers must slow down and watch out for trick-or-treaters, especially around crosswalks and driveways.

Top tips to keep your kids safe on Halloween

For parents and children:
•   Choose light-colored costumes that can be seen in the dark.
•   Decorate your children’s costumes with reflective materials.
•   Give them flashlights and glow sticks to carry in order to see/be seen better.
•   Cross the street safely at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
•   Walk, don’t run, across the street.
•   Walk on sidewalks or paths.
•   If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.
•   Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.
•   Slow down and stay alert – watch out for cars that are turning or backing up.
•   Never dart out into the street or cross in between parked cars.
•   Masks can obstruct a child’s vision, so use non-toxic face paint, make-up, etc.

For drivers:
•   Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving.
•   Please find a designated driver if you plan on drinking.
•   Buckle up to be safe and report drunk drivers to local law enforcement.
•   Slow down in residential neighborhoods and school zones.
•   Remember popular trick-or-treating hours are between 5:30 and 9:30 p.m.
•   Be sure to turn on your full headlights.
•   Be especially alert to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.
•   Slowly and carefully enter and exit driveways and alleys.
•   Eliminate distractions such as talking on the phone, texting or eating.

Treats:
While pedestrian safety is a main concern on Halloween, parents and kids should also be careful when dealing with candy. Remind children to only eat treats in original and unopened wrappers.
