Thanksgiving Economics

Because of the lingering effects of the recession, Thanksgiving 2011 will not be as great an economic boom as before, but reports indicate increased spending is expected.

For example, an “American Farm Bureau Federation study claims the cost of turkey and other related Thanksgiving food items costs 13 percent more this year. Their estimate was based on a sample meal consisting of turkey, stuffing, peas, pumpkin pie, rolls, sweet potatoes, fresh cranberries, and other items. The total cost of the family meal was $49.20. Let say, the average family meal will consists of 8-10 member and/or friends. The total cost of a food on Thanksgiving will be no less than $16.6 billion.

A recent AAA survey shows 38.2 million Americans plan on driving an average of 706 miles to their destination. They won’t be traveling by pink elephant either. Nearly 3.4 million will fly by plane, according to the American Automobile Association (not American Alcoholic Anonymous) survey. American traveler expected to spend an average of $554 each. That totals over $23 billion. Along all of the greasy turkey, fattening dressing, and calorie boosting pie, that is a lot of gas, especially at over $3 a gallon.

Some might want to extend their trip to play in the Turkey-Lurky Bowl, which is held in New York City. It would be a great way to work off some of the excess blubber, relieve some of the pent up holiday pressure, and enjoy Central Park.

If you bit more lazy like me, you could entertain yourself by watching My Life As A Turkey, a PBS documentary about Joe Hutto experience with turkeys. Or, if you happen to be bored out-of-your-gourd, you could take Kipliner’s

. (That is giving thanks that one’s still has an IQ after stuffing oneself life a crazy person on Thursday and vowing never to do it again on Friday.)

Speaking of Friday, Kiplinger’s Money Magazine reports Black Friday spending is expected to top $45 billion. One possible reason is many retailers intend to start on Thursday at midnight. According to the International Council of Shopping Centers, the expected amount in sales will account for about 21% of retailers annual sales.

For at least two Minnesota turkeys, they are counting more than economic blessings, according to the Associated Press. I’m certain they are thankful for a royal trip to see the President of the United States as well as for being pardoned. I’m not sure from what sin crime turkeys may be pardoned but like all of us inheritors of the Puritan Thanksgiving tradition they can be thankful to God for escaping the eternal axe. That’s what Puritans used to call the economy of God’s grace.

The Christmas Friendly Retailer List

StandforChristmas.com offers one of the best ratings list of Christmas friendly (and unfriendly) major retail chain stores.

The five most Christmas friendly retailers are Bass Pro (98%), Cabela (95%), Land’s End (89%), KMart (85%), and Sears (82%). The five most anti-Christmas are The Gap (82%), Best Buy (77%), Banana Republic (75%), American Eagle Outfitters (70%), and Old Navy (57%).

Christmas is a Christian holiday celebrating the birth of the God’s light of redemptive justice, hope, and peace to all humanity.

Kroger associates in Ohio ratify labor contract

Dayton area employees of the The Kroger Co. have ratified a new labor agreement.

The associates are members of United Food & Commercial Workers Union Local 75.

The agreement covers more than 4,000 associates who work in 30 stores in Dayton and surrounding areas.

“This agreement provides good, stable jobs for our associates, increases take-home pay, and provides high-quality, affordable health care,” said Geoff Covert, president of Kroger’s Cincinnati/Dayton division.

The Naught and Nice List of Christmas Retailers

American Family Association conducted research into retailers who take a politically correct (secular) approach to Christmas and those who acknowledge Christmas—well, as Christmas—and not as a mere holiday.

Naughty retailers located in the Xenia include CVS Pharmacy, Kroger, Radio Shack, and Super Value. Regionally, those naughty corporate retailers who would sterilize Christ from the Christmas holiday include Barnes & Nobles, Costco, The Gap, Old Navy, Office Depot, Olive Garden, and Staples.

Local retailers on the good or nice list include Big Lots, Family Dollar, Dollar General, Kmart, Lowe’s, Rite Aid, Walgreens, and Wal-mart. I noticed Fulmers is another retailer officially for Christmas. Other regional retailers who are for Christmas include Bass Pro Shops, Bed Bath & Beyond, Belk, Best Buy, Home Depot, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Menard’s, Petsmart, Sears, Super D Drugs Store, and Target.

After all, Christmas has a long history in the United States and around the world. Christmas is a special time of joyful giving and receiving. Yes, God so loved the world that He gave us the babe in the manger. Jesus Christ has not only benefited the world but He (the law-fulfilling gospel covenant) is also at the heart of all originally principles of our freedom. Why let those who hate God and morality rob us of the beautiful historical heritage? Why allow those same people and those businesses supporting them rob us of the source of our liberty and rights?

Concerning an atheistic yultide holiday, I say, “Bah! Humbug.” This is the season for a Merry Christmas!

XAMA Meeting Thursday Sept 4 at 8am

The next Xenia Area Merchants’ Association meeting will be held at Express Yourself Coffeehouse tomorrow morning (Sept. 4) just after rooster crows at 8AM. On the agenda for discussion is the up-and-coming Old Fashioned Days, development of the XAMA website, and advertising opportunities.

Buyers to merchants: we love saving bucks on good stuff. Buyers to gasoline retailers: Even other merchants love specials on gas. Go ahead–try it; you might like it. Trust me…we all will.
