Human Trafficking Awareness

Yesterday was Human Trafficking Awareness Day. This day was set by a resolution of Congress in hopes Americans would understand that the fight for freedom is not over. This fight is part of our national heritage and identity. It compelled our ancestors to colonize this continent.

Unless Americans remember the right of liberty is rooted in the nature of humanity’s equality and dignity, no legitimate reason exists for continued efforts to liberate enslaved people.

What is the nature of human equality and dignity? The Declaration of Independence defines as created by nature’s God. Because the human best reflects the nature of God, the dignity of every human being is of inestimable worth. Acts of injustice and cruelty reflect the worst of human thought and behavior.

It will take more than one day each year for Americans to reeducate themselves about God, equality, liberty, and law out of which American freedom originated.

At the beginning of this month, President Obama declared January as human trafficking prevention month. During his proclamation, Pres. Obama stated:

As a Nation, we have known moments of great darkness and greater light; and dim years of chattel slavery illuminated and brought to an end by President Lincoln’s actions and a painful Civil War. Yet even today, the darkness and inhumanity of enslavement exists. Millions of people worldwide are held in compelled service, as well as thousands within the United States. During National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, we acknowledge that forms of slavery still exist in the modern era, and we recommit ourselves to stopping the human traffickers who ply this horrific trade….

Fighting modern slavery and human trafficking is a shared responsibility. This month, I urge all Americans to educate themselves about all forms of modern slavery and the signs and consequences of human trafficking. Together, we can and must end this most serious, ongoing criminal civil rights violation.

Indeed, it is a crime against God and humanity.

There are a number of organizations and on-line educational sites. They include Polaris Project, A-21 Campaign, humantrafficking.org, Human Trafficking Blog to name a few.

To understand the problem truly, one must retrace the history of the struggle of liberty. A good place to start would be with the Bible. From Genesis to Revelation, it tells of the ancient struggle for freedom and how it has been achieved. This is one of the key texts that informed the Protestant reformers, Puritans, English reformers, colonists, preachers, theologians, moral philosophers, lawyers and their laws of nature and of nations, and even our national founding. Human nature and human rights cannot be fully understood without understanding the sacred text about human bondage and freedom.

Again…

David Zanotti, president of the American Policy Roundtable, recently wrote an interesting article that was partly about the unending vigilance required to maintain the blessings of liberty. In his article titled Again…, he illustrates his meaning with the following:

What is the one word we hear from our kids and grandkids? When little ones find something they truly enjoy they ask us over and over to do it “again.” This is the way of children. What they love never grows old. So what happens to the rest of us as we grow older?

I intentional left the most personal part of the illustration that preceded the quote just as the biblical illustration that follows only because of the need to keep length of this post to a minimum.

Following the illustrations, Zanotti gets to his central point about liberty’s repetitive requirement.

The battle for real liberty is never done. It has to be waged over and over again in every generation because people forget.

Every year we face the same old challenge at the Statehouse and on Capitol Hill. Politicians and the media elites are trying to bring forth “new ideas” that sound exactly like the “new ideas” that failed years ago.

Zanotti continues with several examples of policies that failed to produce promised economic or social benefits. One example was the “outcome based education” reform. Another was the promise that casino gambling would solve our state’s budget crisis. Zanotti seems to bemoan the fact that no seems to remember the debacle of the Clinton “Health Security Act of 1994” or the failure of Medicare and Medicaid to deliver as promised since 1965.

The same can be said about the federal stimulus and bailouts. Past bailouts helped banks, corporations, states, and foreign nations only to increase the burden on taxpayers. They most recent ones helped banks, GM, some states and local communities for a little while. However, the promise that the billions of stimulus dollars would revive the economy has not been realized at least for main street businesses and mortgage owners.

Moreover, most Americans fail to see Obamacare as helping either. If anything, Obamacare will increase our national debt and cause health insurance cost to rise. Worse than that, Obamacare serves another hammer blow to our liberty. For nowhere does the U.S. Constitution give federal bureaucrats the right to dictate what individual citizens will buy and not buy. The Constitution does empower to them to regulate commerce and to facilitate the prosperity of willing citizens and not big corporations. However, taxing the rich in order to distribute wealth to the poor does not appear to be Constitutional either.

As Zanotti reiterates in his article,

Thus we must re-tell the story of Liberty—again.
We must recall and restate those first principles found in the Scriptures—again.
We must present the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution—again.
We must email and call lawmakers—again.
We must go to the Statehouse and Capitol Hill and testify—again.
We must recruit and train new leaders—again.
We must cover the costs of all these activities—again.

Why A Negative View Helps Life, Liberty and Happiness

By Daniel Downs

Some people regard political or social criticism as degradingly negative. They see being against current issues as anti-productive. According to such people, being positive is always the best policy.

Who could argue against being positive, but is just being positive really productive? Not when being positive actually means getting along with uncritical yea-sayers. What is anti-productive is mindlessly

believing what the authorities claim. The view that the professionals know best is positively negative as far as being a member of a free self-governing citizenry. How can people be freely independent while at the same time being mostly dependent on the professionals or corporate and big government institutions? It is not possible.

Put another way, if Americans vote to give government almost all of their rights, they can no longer live the American dream of independence. Consuming, voting, going just about anywhere, and feeling good about life is not the definition of freedom and independence. People can be just as happy living under socialist dictatorships, elite oligarchies, or democracies run by the same as those living under the rule of anarchism or popular federal republics.

The pursuit of happiness requires life and liberty unfettered by structured dependency whether planned by wealthy political bureaucrats, corporate executives, special interest lobbyists and their causes, or greedy speculators. After all, liberty is meaningless if life is solely in the power of the professionals or government bureaucrats. Under a regime of self-government by “We the People” justice and morality regulated for the common good is vital. Without it, a fragmented culture eventually is dominated by “divide and conquer” special interest parties.

UD Professor of History Dr. Larry Schweikart Endorses Virgil Vaduva Candidate for Greene County Commission

Today the Dayton Daily News Editorial Board endorsed my opponent, Mr. Alan Anderson and chose him to be “the better pick” as a Greene County Commissioner, at least in their opinion. They wrote that Mr. Anderson, the incumbent, was the “more go-along-get-along kind of person” as opposed to someone like me, who has “fringe ideas” and is unwilling to toe the line set by the GOP liberal leadership. You can read the entire poorly-written, error-ridden editorial here: http://tinyurl.com/y7maogv

The truth is my friends that the DDN endorsement of my opponent is an illustration of a sad situation, that we as a nation, state and county have come to a place where freedom, liberty, and freedom to homeschool and live apart from government intrusion are all seen as being on the fringe. Those willing to “go along” are nodded-upon and endorsed to be part of the political and electoral process. It is sad, is it not?

In my interview with DDN I spoke frankly about my views of government, taxation, freedom and liberty. I spoke about the Children Services and their harassment of homeschooling families and the super-inflated budget of that organization. I spoke against the high taxes in our county and the responsibility that the Greene County Republicans have to their principles of small government and low taxation, regardless of the level of government. As a result, my ideas were described as “fringe” and my opponent was endorsed. But fortunately, the outcome of an election does not depend on the GOP or the Dayton Daily News; it is up to the voters to make sound choices. Therefore I am asking you, friends and registered voters to let your friends and family members know that right now and on May 4, they have a chance to vote for a real conservative, a real Republican, unwilling to compromise on any principles of freedom, liberty and taxation.

So I am proudly presenting to you an endorsement given to me by Dr. Larry Schweikart, University of Dayton Professor of History, author of A Patriot’s History of the United States, 7 Events that Made America America and 48 Liberal Lies about American History. Dr. Schweikart has been a guest on Glenn Beck’s show on Fox News, and on the Rush Limbaugh show, and he submitted the following endorsement for my campaign:

“I have known Virgil Vaduva to be someone who deeply cares about freedom, liberty and the American way of life. Virgil’s past which involved life in a Communist country and business ownership shaped him into someone who is experienced and can handle the hard hits of life and politics. His desire to serve and participate in the political life here in the Dayton area is genuine and I believe that he can deliver what Greene County needs today, a real conservative candidate willing and able to pursue the real changes needed today by the GOP.

The political atmosphere in the area is in dire need of new faces, and Virgil is one of them, so it is my pleasure to offer my endorsement for his candidacy for Green County Commissioner.”

Celebrating Liberty

By Andy Myers

The worst decision you can make is to think that you can do so little that you do nothing at all.

That is why the Ohio Freedom Alliance will present The Southwest Ohio Liberty Conference, a unique speaker’s forum celebrating the true spirit and timeless traditions of Liberty, Honest Money and State Sovereignty. These 3 ideals are critical to the success of placing America back on the path to greatness. We need to reevaluate our philosophy of what freedom truly is. While many profess to be freedom loving Americans, they only advocate those freedoms they favor and fail to defend those freedoms they are at odds with. The concept of freedom today is wholly at odds with natural law, a concept of freedom found in the Declaration of Independence. The founders knew very well the implications of respecting natural law and used its intent vigorously in proposing our republican form of government We also neeed honest money to prosper. That is to say money produced without violating fraud laws, e.g., gold and silver. This has been a principle widely misunderstood by those who profess to be pro-liberty. The evidence is irrefutable and the theory is sound that fiat, or paper money has been the root cause of all the financial crisis in history. Honest interpretation of world history is a great teacher and proves without a doubt that private central bankers and governments are poor stewards of a nations wealth. Today the dollar is worth about $0.04 in comparison to its value in 1913 before the Federal Reserve Act was illegally passed by Congress. We also would be wise to remember the maxim that a government which governs least governs best. The bloated government headquartered in Washington, D.C. should make any freedom loving citizen cringe with disbelief and fear. There is practically nothing you can do, from getting married, to selling lemonade without first getting some kind of permit and then paying the applicable fees before enjoying your pursuit of happiness. With our rulers favorite control mechanism the general welfare clause (intolerable act) , and just plain disregard of article 1 section 8 of the Constitution, our 3 branches of government (and a slew of unconstitutional bureaucracies), is now our servant become master. It is time for citizens to challenge their state representatives and push for Ohio’ State Soveriengty Resolution. It is time for our state government to nullify unconstitutional laws and regulations to protect its citizens. It is time to reestablish the proper role of states taking care of it’s own affairs. A Revolution is here whether you know it or not. Albeit a peaceful one for now, it is this generation who has whether they claim it or not, been given the responsibility of reclaiming what is rightfully theirs. Someday, this generation may too garner the title “the greatest generation”, if we are able to restore the blessings of liberty to a nation still worthy of it.

The Southwest Ohio Liberty Conference, sponsored by the Ohio Freedom Alliance, will feature lectures on sound money, state’s rights and individual liberty. The event is open to the public, with a suggested donation of $10 per person to defray costs. The doors open at 1:00 p.m. on November 21st for networking and light refreshments, and speakers will address the audience from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Beavercreek Golf Club is just minutes from the Mall at Fairfield Commons, at 2800 New Germany-Trebein Road in Beavercreek, Ohio.

“We Hold These Truths” Americans Have Wandered Out of History, Part IV

In this last installment of his sermon, Rev. Atwood shares some more personal thoughts and an appeal.

by Rev. Nate Atwood

And so I sit, in my driveway, hymnal in hand, meditating on the words of the past hymns, “My Country ’tis of Thee,” and thus upon the thoughts of those who had a much higher vision for America than I hold—“Our father’s God to Thee, Author of liberty, to Thee we sing; long may our land be bright with freedom’s holy light; protect us by Thy might, Great God our King.” I open my Bible and drink in the Scriptural truth recorded by Moses, “I am the Lord thy God that
brought thee out of the land of slavery. . . .” “Proclaim liberty throughout the land and to all the inhabitants thereof. . . .” Yes, it is God who gave us liberty.

And as I think on these things I watch my two-year-old son playing in our backyard, this blond-haired little boy wandering from swing set to flower bed . . . in his own way rejoicing in the gifts of God. He is happy. He is safe. He is free. May God grant that he will continue to grow up in a nation of liberty wherein he will have the privilege of pursuing the dreams God has for His life. May he live in the dignity which only freedom can fully afford and which cost our founding fathers and their families so very much.

As I sit, and meditate, and watch my son, it seems my sanctified imagination gets swept away, and in this holy moment I sense a peculiar variation of the “cloud of witnesses” round about me. I imagine–and it is only inspired imagination—General Washington, President Adams, and Patrick Henry standing around my chair, their hand upon my shoulder, their gaze also fixed upon little Noah. I see them in my mind’s eye smiling at this blond boy’s freedom, safety, promise, and pleasure at swings and slides and flowers.

I can almost hear their voices, softly saying, “This is what we did it for . . . so that you could raise your son in the dignity, potential, and joy which freedom affords. We delight with you, young citizen. Our sacrifices were well worth it. Now, raise him to the Light and introduce him to the Author of Freedom. And in that introduction make sure that he knows the sacred story of this nation as well as the history of Israel. Teach him to think Biblically. Yes, make him a student of history.”

Reverend Nate Atwood has been in the ministry for sixteen years as an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church. He has been Senior Pastor at Kempsville Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia, since Palm Sunday, 1999.

“We Hold These Truths” Americans Have Wandered Out of History, Part III

by Rev. Nate Atwood

In the second installment of Rev. Atwood’s sermon on the biblical basis of our nation’s legal history, he focused on the definitive biblical aspects of the Declaration of Independence. Secular authors like Alan Dershowitz argue that its primary author, Thomas Jefferson, was a deist. This is the point at which we begin the third installment of Rev. Atwood’s sermon.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Now some of you are thinking, “But Thomas Jefferson was a deist, not an evangelical Christian. How can we claim such firm Biblical footing for his document?” First of all, it’s important to note that Thomas Jefferson was not the sole author of the Declaration of Independence. In June of 1776 a committee of five people were tasked by the Continental Congress to write a Declaration. John Adams, the devout and deeply Biblical Christian, was the chairman of that committee. He tasked Jefferson with the work of writing as he recognized Jefferson’s literary talent. But it must be said that the work came out of Adams’ committee and under his oversight. It also must be said that while Jefferson was not an evangelical Christian, he was still deeply affected by the Biblical imprint of his time. Thus, in reflecting on the Declaration of Independence, he wrote, “We do not claim these rights under the charters of kings or legislators, but under the King of Kings.”

The truth of the matter is that liberty had been developing as a national idea for many years. Jefferson and Adams, as well as the whole of the Continental Congress, did not live or write in a vacuum. Franklin Cole, in a book entitled, They Preached Liberty, extensively studied the sermons preached from Colonial pulpits during the years leading into the Revolutionary War. His thesis was that all of the ideas found in the Declaration were first found in America’s pulpits. For example, in 1768, Reverend Daniel Shute of Hingham, Massachusetts, declared, “life, liberty and property are the gifts of the Creator.” (Sound familiar?) In 1770, in an election sermon Rev. Charles Turner insisted, “The Scriptures cannot be rightfully expounded without explaining them in a manner friendly to the cause of liberty.” In 1768 Rev. Richard Slater of Mansfield, Connecticut assured his listeners, “God never gives men up to be slaves till they lose their national virtue, and abandon themselves to slavery.”

Given this careful devotion to God in the writing of the Declaration of Independence, it is not surprising that when it was first read publicly on July 4, 1776, a bell was rung to call the people of Philadelphia together. That bell is the “Liberty Bell,” and you can still read on it the inscription placed on it for that day. . . . “Proclaim liberty unto all the land, unto all the inhabitants thereof.” In case you don’t recognize it, that’s a Bible verse Leviticus 25:10. In fact, this might well be called America’s verse. Yes, our forefathers knew it and built their lives upon this truth . . . it was God who gave us liberty. And because liberty came from God they entitled it “the holy cause of liberty.”

Furthermore, because liberty came from God and was therefore sacred, these signers of the Declaration of Independence were more than willing to die for their convictions. Adams and Jefferson survived the war without great loss. Other signers of the Declaration did not fare so well. Of those fifty-six men, five were captured by the British, tortured, and then executed. Twelve had their homes ransacked or burned. Two lost their sons serving in Revolutionary Army.
Another two had sons captured. Nine of the fifty-six fought and died in the war from wounds or the hardships of battle. Indeed, they did pledge their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. Such were the sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild-eyed, rabblerousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. And they valued liberty, because they knew that liberty came from God and was therefore holy. Remember, these fifty-six men were the ones who added two more clearly Scriptural references to God to Jefferson’s version of the Declaration as it came out of Adam’s committee. The historical record is clear: they were motivated by their belief in God (God as He is defined by Scripture). No wonder they were willing to put their lives on the line. . . . After all, during the war one of the favorite slogans of the Americans was “No King but Jesus!”

In 1831, in Albany, New York the French author Alexis de Tocqueville recorded yet another July 4th celebration. Found in his book Democracy in America, in which this celebrated author repeatedly noted the unbreakable connection between American democracy and American faith in God, de Tocqueville recorded that on this particular July 4th he was awakened by the firing of guns in a federal salute and the ringing of all church bells. He came out to see what was going on
and was invited to join in a great parade, devoid of “any real military splendor” but marked by people from all walks of life, floats representing every conceivable occupation, and “three or four old soldiers, who fought with Washington, whom the city preserves like precious relics, and whom all the citizens honor.” They “carried with great pomp a tattered old American flag, bullet torn, which came down from the war of independence.”

De Tocqueville expected the parade to end in some fine government building but was surprised to see it ended, instead, in a Methodist church where the entire Declaration of Independence was read with “much warmth and dignity.” He recalled that the reading was preceded by “a prayer made by a Protestant minister . . . I recall this fact,” he said, “because it is characteristic of this country, where they never do anything without the assistance of religion.”

Let’s remember the lesson of history . . . religion can survive in the absence of freedom. But freedom without religion is tenuous at best and can even be dangerous. George Washington reminded the country of this truth in his farewell address, “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.” So how might you celebrate the 4th of July? I think the record of history I just went through should give you some ideas. I just hope you will celebrate it. I also hope that you will, as families worshipping together. And perhaps you’ll experience a moment such as I knew and which I recorded in my prayer journal….

Ohio joins other states in reclaiming their liberty and sovereignty

Over eight states have passed resolutions reaffirming the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The Tenth Amendment provides that “powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”Among twenty other states proposing similar resolution is Ohio.

The Ohio Freedom Alliance is one of the groups leading the Liberty and Sovereignty Resolution initiative.

Those leading the initiative believe that the federal government has consistently over-stepped it’s constitutional boundaries and usurped the powers reserved to the states, and therefore the people.

The Ohio Liberty and Sovereignty Resolution will remind the federal government of it’s proper role and place. The goal is to have this resolution adopted and passed by the Ohio State Legislature during this calendar year of 2009.

To read and sign the petition, go here. All signatures will be delivered to the Ohio State House in early to mid-March.
