Whistleblower Files Suit to Remove Greene County Prosecutor

Earlier this month, John Mitchel, former Republican candidate for Ohio’s Seventh Congressional District, filed suit (Case No: 2011-CV-0114) in Greene County Common Pleas Court to remove County Prosecutor Stephen K. Haller. Mitchel alleges Haller practiced “gross misconduct” in the manner in which he defended himself and other Greene County Republican Executive Committee members in a public records request action filed in May 2009. Mitchel also claims that Haller conspired with an assistant prosecutor to withhold public records related to the 2003 BRAC Initiative Agreement contract between Greene County and the Dayton Development Coalition.

In response to filing the lawsuit, Mitchel commented, “It is well past the time that we demand our elected officials are held accountable to the same laws that apply to ‘we the people.’ As long as we allow law enforcement officials and the courts to tolerate cronyism and pay-to-play politics, we get exactly what we deserve…..self-interested politicians who hold themselves above the law. As this scandal and others unwind, it’s my sense that the cover-up to conceal fraud, waste, abuse and corruption in Greene County extends to the top of the GOP chain of command here in Ohio. However, in the meantime Mr. Haller has rights, and as it should be, he will have the opportunity to defend himself before a jury of his peers if he chooses to do so.”

Greene County Property Taxes Higher Than State and National Median

The newest on-line tax tool is Tax Foundation’s County Property Tax Lookup. Anyone can look their county’s median property tax payout for the past 5 years as compared to both state and national median tax payments.

Median is a statistical term for the highest number in the middle of the statistical bell curve. It is not exactly a true average but the median is close to the average. In this instance, it is the middle point of property taxes paid beginning with those who pay the lowest taxes to those paying highest amount of property taxes.

I looked up the median property tax paid in Greene County Ohio. What I found was Greene County property owners pay higher taxes than other property owners throughout the nation and Ohio.

Based on a five year average (2005-2009), median real estate taxes paid by Greene County property owners was $2,326. Ohio median real estate taxes for the same period was $1,752 and, nationally, it was $1,805.

The Tax Foundation included comparisons of real estate taxes paid as a percent of median home value and as a percent of median income. Over the same five year period, the above Greene County real estate taxes equated to 1.49% of median home value and 3.22% of median income. Ohio property taxes equated to 1.3% of home value and 2.94% median income and, nationally, land owners paid 0.97% of home values and 2.81% of median income.

Blue Ribbon Task Force Community Update

by U.S. Rep. Steve Austria

Last week, I joined the Blue Ribbon Task Force in Dayton to update community leaders and elected officials on the status of the recommendations from the Blue Ribbon Commission report. I think it is important now, more than ever, to focus on how our region can bring our ‘A’ game to the table to be more competitive and bring additional jobs to Ohio. With Wright-Patterson Air Force Base being the largest single site employer in the state, it is vitally important that we continue to evaluate how we can help grow Wright-Patt and better do business with the base.

The Blue Ribbon Commission, which was formed in 2009, was made up of small businesses, community leaders, retirees from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) and academia, to evaluate the strengths of the region and better compete for contracts in support of WPAFB. The Blue Ribbon Task Force was then formed to implement the recommendations proposed by the Blue Ribbon Commission Report in July 2010. The recommendations aim to support Ohio’s military facilities and increase the number of WPAFB contracts awarded to local companies, bringing more jobs to the region. The Task Force has done an extraordinary job implementing the Commission’s recommendations, and I am encouraged to hear of their progress and success. This community-based effort has truly taken enormous strides towards returning jobs to the state of Ohio.

Also last week, the Task Force launched and highlighted a social media Web site that was created to address several of the Commission’s recommendations. The Web site was designed to be a resource to the community, where people can share community information. I encourage you to learn more by visiting this page on my Web site to see for yourself how the Task Force’s efforts can help bring the community together. Wright State University’s School of Engineering and Computer Science has also agreed to run and operate the Web site from here on out, and I look forward to their continued efforts.

Myers’ Letter Urges Rep. Hackett to Support Healthcare Reform Bill HJR 2

February 7, 2011

Representative Hackett,

It is my understanding you have yet to sign on as a co-sponsor of H.J.R. 2, proposing to enact Section 21 of Article I of the Constitution of the State of Ohio to preserve the freedom of Ohioans to choose their health care and health care coverage.

It is my hope, along with many of your constituents in the 84th district that you will do so very soon. The Ohio Liberty Council, The Ohio Freedom Alliance and the several Liberty Groups in your district are ramping up to engage representatives to insure that Ohioans will remain free and not “forced” to purchase healthcare. It is my hope other constituents will also contact you to ask that you very quickly become a co-sponsor.

If you have any questions or if I can be of further assistance please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thank you for representing the 84th district.

Sincerely,
Andy Myers

Rep. Steve Austria on Blue Ribbon Commission

It is important now, more than ever, to focus on how our region can be more competitive and bring additional jobs to Ohio. This week,  I joined members of the Blue Ribbon Commission at a meeting held at Wright State University. I appointed the commission to examine how local companies and universities can better position themselves to win more contracts, create more jobs and support Wright Patterson Air Force Base, one of the largest single site employers in the state. It is made up of a broad cross-section of talented and energetic community leaders who have extensive experience both inside and outside the fence, including business leaders and individuals in academia.

When the commission was formed, members were tasked with submitting their recommendations for increasing the number of contracts awarded to local companies, in turn creating more private-sector jobs in the area that can be sustained for years to come. They were asked to look into a wide variety of issues including identifying any impediments to local companies and determining the best business model to receive contracts.

The commission has completed its work and identified 18 specific ways we can enhance regional economic opportunities through partnerships with the business community, academia and government in the Dayton area. John McCance, who is retired Air Force, and Gary Kowal, who has several years of experience in defense contracting, served as co-chairs of the Blue Ribbon Commission and presented the commission’s findings, conclusions and recommendations to the public. Some recommendations highlighted in the report include,

* Utilize social media (a website, or collaborative networking site) to house centralized information to include such items as a calendar of events; detailed information on government requirements; prime/sub contractor opportunities and links to related informational sites.

* Leverage the region’s engineering capabilities and skill base to accelerate subcontractor opportunities with large defense contractors who are involved in the research, development and manufacture of weapon systems acquired by WPAFB.

* Publish the “Corporate Development Education Framework” as a tool to help beginning, intermediate and advanced businesses assess their government contracting maturity and identify areas for improvement.

* Establish a centralized electronic capability for local area businesses having service, R&D, manufacturing, and other capabilities to provide detailed information about their qualifications, capacity and contact information and have it indexed by product and service.

* Encourage the State of Ohio and local governments to support a program, similar to the State of Utah, which provides funded support in the areas of opportunity assessment, strategy, proposal development, contract negotiations, capture and program support.

* Provide access to additional resources and training in the area of proposal writing and preparation.

Bill Conner For Congress and Wannabe Jim Tressel

Bill Conner is a local candidate running for U.S. Congress. While preparing for the Fairborn 4th of July parade, he and his campaign staff were pleasantly surprised by the visit of the famous OSU Buckeye Man and Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel. Unfortunately, both famous visitors were not the real thing. They were merely fun-loving impersonators albeit very good fakes as seen in the picture below.

The picture above includes Bob Billett, Coach Tressel (Dennis Singleton), Bill Conner, Carolyn Conner, Buckeye Man (Larry Lokai), Jason Conner, and Andy Feeser. Carroll Day, John Flemming, and Abby Comstock completed the crew for the parade.

Let’s hope Conner’s supporters are the real thing.

Maryellen O’Shaughnessy Speaks to Greene Dems

The Greene County Democratic Party (GCDP) Women’s Club hosted Maryellen O’Shaughnessy, Democratic candidate for Ohio Secretary of State, at the GCDP Headquarters at 87 E. Main Street in Xenia on Monday 6/28/10. A discussion with Greene County based Democratic candidates followed her very informative speech. Pictured left to right are GCDP Chair Don Hollister, Bill Conner, Maryellen O’Shaughnessy, and Steve Key. Bill Conner is the candidate for U.S. Congress and Steve Key is the candidate Greene County Commissioner.

Vaduva On Final Stretch In Campaign For County Commissioner

As the May 4 Ohio Republican primaries are just one day away, I wanted to say “thank you” to all of you supporting my campaign through donations, encouragement and volunteer work. When I decided last year to run for Greene County Commissioner, it was an easy decision – it came about as a result of looking at our current political environment and saying, “enough is enough!”

In an article today Dayton Daily News recognized how the GOP is facing
tough challenges from candidates with Tea Party values, not just here
locally, but also at a state and federal level (see article: http://bit.ly/9VCOhW).

What the Dayton Daily News article does not cover however, is the
truth that the GOP political machine in Ohio had declared all-out war
on any Tea Party candidate running on a Republican ticket. John
Husted, and other candidates here in Ohio have even used a bogus “Tea Party Values” logo on their campaign correspondence, trying to mislead voters into thinking that they are being endorsed or supported by Tea Party organizations.

This is some outrageous behavior on the part of the Ohio GOP, but it
is not surprising. Both at a local and state level, the Republican Party officials are really worried about idealist candidates, and real people with real principles running for office and taking the reigns of their party back; they are doing their best to ensure that this will not happen. This is why I need your help.

I am running on principles alone, as a result of being fed up with the
Greene County GOP and the ruthless political machine that had captured our party here long ago, at the expense of our souls and our
principles of small government and low taxation. I am not a politician, an attorney or someone that had spent a lifetime in the political sphere. I consider my inexperience as a politician an asset, and I hope so do you.

This is a small chance we all have here in Greene County now to try to
reclaim our ideals and principles, so I would be humbled to receive your support and your vote on Tuesday. My promise is that we can use this first step to try to steer our county into the right direction and start to slowly get back to our roots.
